Cyclone Hamoon Intensifies, IMD Issues Rain Alert In 7 States, Warning For Fishermen

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the cyclonic storm 'Hamoon' has intensified, reaching the status of a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

According to meteorological experts, the cyclone is projected to maintain its trajectory in a north-northeastward direction. It is anticipated that 'Hamoon' will make landfall on the Bangladesh coast, specifically between Khepupara and Chittagong, on October 25, 2023, albeit as a deep depression. Simultaneously, the IMD has issued rainfall alerts for seven states, anticipating the cyclone's impact.

In light of the cyclone 'Hamoon,' the IMD has issued rainfall warnings for several northeastern states, including Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, and south Assam, covering the period from October 24 to 26. Mizoram is expected to experience heavy rainfall on October 24, while even more substantial showers are forecast for Tripura. The heavy rain is likely to persist in these regions on October 25, with a gradual decrease by October 26, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall in select areas.

The outlook for south Assam and eastern Meghalaya on October 24 and 25 entails light to moderate rainfall, with isolated instances of heavy rainfall in south Assam. Coastal districts in Odisha are likely to witness light to moderate rainfall across most regions on Tuesday, October 24.

Coastal districts in West Bengal are also anticipated to experience light to moderate rainfall in most areas on October 24, with isolated heavy rainfall expected in coastal areas of West Bengal.

Considering the prevailing conditions, a cautionary note has been issued to fishermen, advising them against venturing into the east-central and north Bay of Bengal, as well as along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, Bangladesh, and north Myanmar on October 24 and 25. The IMD's bulletin further highlights that sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal on these dates will range from high to very high.
