Cyclone Biparjoy Weakens Into ‘Very Severe’ Storm but Continues March towards Gujarat Coast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that the extremely severe cyclonic storm, Cyclone Biparjoy, has weakened into a very severe cyclonic storm. Despite the weakening, the cyclone remains a significant threat as it continues to move northwards at a speed of five kilometers per hour. Currently situated approximately 290 km southwest of Gujarat's Porbandar, Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall in Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kutch regions, as well as the adjoining coasts of Pakistan, on Thursday.
Cyclone Biparjoy has already demonstrated its persistence and strength, surpassing records set by previous Arabian Sea cyclones. It has sustained its intensity for an impressive 126 hours, the longest duration observed since satellite data became available in 1982.

The cyclone's evolution has been notable, with two stages of acceleration recorded so far. Between June 6 and 7, its wind speed increased from 55 kmph to 139 kmph. Subsequently, between June 9 and 10, after a temporary decline, the wind speed intensified from 120 kmph to 195 kmph, as reported by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC). Starting as a depression on June 6, Cyclone Biparjoy transformed into a severe cyclonic storm by June 10.
