"Corruption In GST Registrations": Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman React To Viral Post

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday reacted to a social media post, in which, a user on LinkedIn complained over the delay in obtaining a GST registration number for a new firm he intended to start with his wife. Despite waiting for more than 20 days, the number was not issued, leading the man to suspect that the process could be expedited with a bribe.

This accusation quickly caught the eye of the public, including professionals specializing in tax compliance and whistleblowers.

Among those who responded to Gupta's claims was Abhishek Raja Ram, a notable figure among tax whistleblowers. He criticized the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for being oblivious to the rampant corruption within the GST registration process. "CBIC has no idea of the ground reality of corruption in GST Registrations. Their Executive Officers are so corrupt that even VG Sir has to vent out his frustration. Better top-level Officers take control of Registrations to save the country from corruption," Raja Ram stated emphatically on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Finance Minister's Intervention and Official Response

The outcry over the alleged corruption in the GST registration process prompted Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to address the issue directly. Through a statement on X, she emphasized the importance of transparency and honesty in serving taxpayers, highlighting the government's commitment to earning their trust. "It is our responsibility to serve taxpayers. But while doing that, we must be honest and transparent, because that's how we earn their trust. I believe the GST Board and officers will continue to be careful and quick in responding to people's issues," Sitharaman conveyed, underlining the need for swift and fair responses to public concerns.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) further clarified the situation surrounding Gupta's application for GST registration. Filed under the Delhi State GST jurisdiction on May 26, the application encountered a delay due to a missing designation in the rent agreement, a detail Gupta had not yet rectified. CBIC also criticized the spread of unverified claims, urging the public to refrain from circulating misleading information without proper verification.

The incident not only spotlighted the alleged corruption in the GST registration process but also showcased the quick response from high-level officials to public grievances. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to maintain integrity within India's tax system and the importance of community vigilance to ensure transparency and accountability in government processes.
