Congress Unites To Expand Voter Base In Haryana Ahead Of 2024 Assembly Elections
In the wake of its recent defeats in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the Congress Party is approaching the Haryana Assembly elections with heightened caution. Leaders are focusing on mending internal rifts while striving to broaden their voter base to challenge the ruling BJP's decade-long dominance.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi is stepping up his campaign efforts after an initial period of inactivity. His strategy aims to unify anti-incumbency sentiments across various caste and community lines, addressing the urban-rural divide to propel Congress ahead in what is shaping up to be a largely bipolar election.

Congress Unites To Expand Voter Base In Haryana
The first rally that Rahul addressed was in Assandh, situated on the border of Karnal and Jind districts. This constituency was strategically chosen, as the Congress candidate and sitting MLA, Shamsher Singh Gogi, is closely aligned with party general secretary Kumari Selja. Gogi's recent withdrawal from campaigning, following a perceived sidelining by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, highlights the tensions within the party regarding ticket distribution.
In Haryana, where Jat voters (27%) and Dalits (21%) comprise the core of Congress' support, the dynamics are particularly delicate. Hooda's stronghold within the Jat community poses a potential threat to party cohesion. Responding to discontent within the ranks, former Chief Minister and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has extended an invitation to Selja to join the BJP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his election rallies, has labeled Congress as "anti-Dalit," predicting a collapse of the party's influence in Haryana akin to their downfall in Madhya Pradesh.
Intensified Campaign Efforts
Learning from past electoral setbacks, Congress has ramped up its campaign by organizing a series of roadshows led by Rahul Gandhi over the past few days. The focus has shifted away from a Jat versus non-Jat narrative, which the BJP has been promoting, to a broader discussion on job scarcity in Haryana.
In his rally at Assandh, Rahul highlighted the lack of job opportunities as a driving force behind youth illegally migrating to the U.S. during his recent interactions with local youth in the U.S. He noted that many young individuals are compelled to take significant risks in search of better prospects.
The rally at Ajan Mandi drew a notable crowd of farmers and grain traders, who expressed frustration over significant delays in grain procurement processes. Additionally, for the first time in many years, Congress is gaining traction in urban areas traditionally dominated by the BJP. The state government's flagship initiative to issue property identity cards has faced severe criticism due to data collection discrepancies. Local traders, such as those in Hisar, have voiced concerns over the arduous process of rectifying errors, which often requires trips to Chandigarh.
As Congress endeavors to consolidate its support and regain momentum in the lead-up to the Haryana Assembly elections, the outcome remains uncertain, hinging on its ability to address internal discord and resonate with a wider voter base.
