Congress Unveils Second Karnataka Candidate List with Prominent Political Families

In a significant political development from Bengaluru, dated March 21, the Congress party has unveiled its second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka. This announcement includes the names of 17 individuals, among whom are relatives of prominent party figures, marking a blend of political lineage and fresh faces in the electoral fray.

Congress Lists Karnataka Candidates

Notably, the list features Priyanka Jarkiholi from Chikkodi, daughter of Satish Jarkiholi, Sowmya Reddy from Bangalore South, daughter of Ramalinga Reddy, and Samyukta S Patil from Bagalkot, daughter of Shivanand Patil. Additionally, Mrinal Ravindra Hebbalkar and Sagar Khandre are contesting from Belgaum and Bidar respectively, bringing forward the next generation of political leaders from their families.

The Congress has also nominated Mansoor Ali Khan and Prabha Mallikarjun for Bangalore Central and Davangere constituencies. Khan is the son of former Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha K Rahman Khan, while Prabha is both the wife of Minister S S Mallikarjun and daughter-in-law to Shamanur Shivashankarappa.

In a move to reclaim Gulbarga (Kalaburagi), Radhakrishna Doddamani, son-in-law of AICC President M Mallikarjun Kharge, has been fielded. Kharge previously won this seat in 2009 and 2014 but faced defeat in 2019. The party has also roped in former IIM Bangalore professor M V Rajeev Gowda for Bangalore North and former IAS officer G Kumar Naik for Raichur.

The second list further includes K Jayaprakash Hegde for Udupi-Chikmagalur among others, with a total of five women candidates making it to this round. This move signifies a notable shift towards embracing youth and new faces within the party's ranks in Karnataka.

State Congress President and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar highlighted this strategic shift, emphasizing the inclusion of young candidates and educated individuals who are backed by strong support systems. This approach aims at fostering accountability and introducing fresh perspectives into the political landscape of Karnataka.

With the first list having been released on March 8, the Congress is yet to announce its candidates for Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Chamarajanagar, and Bellary constituencies. The selection process reveals an ongoing deliberation within the party ranks, with family members of existing politicians and former members vying for nominations.

The BJP had previously announced its candidates for 20 seats last week, setting the stage for a closely contested battle in Karnataka. The state witnessed a sweeping victory by the BJP in the 2019 general elections, securing 25 out of 28 seats. The upcoming elections are scheduled to be held in two phases on April 26 and May 7.

Additionally, the Congress has named Raja Venugopal Naik as its candidate for the Shorapur assembly seat by-poll, also scheduled for May 7. This seat became vacant following the demise of Congress MLA Raja Venkatappa Naik last month.

This round of nominations underscores a strategic blend of experience and new blood within the Congress party as it gears up for a pivotal electoral contest in Karnataka.
