Congress, Left Front's Cooch Behar Alliance Faces Hurdles Ahead of Polls
In a recent development that has stirred the political landscape of West Bengal, the Congress and the Left Front have each announced their candidates for the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat, signaling a potential rift in their pre-poll alliance discussions. The Left Front has chosen Nitish Chandra Roy of the All India Forward Bloc to contest for the seat, while the Congress has nominated Piya Roy Choudhury. This move has raised eyebrows, as it comes amidst ongoing talks of a coalition between the two parties in the state.

The decision has led to a noticeable silence from both camps regarding the Cooch Behar seat, with neither willing to comment on the matter. The electoral battle in Cooch Behar is set to be intense, with TMC's Jagadish Chandra Basunia and the incumbent BJP MP Nisith Pramanik also vying for the seat. This development follows recent statements from West Bengal Congress chief and Baharampur MP Adhir Chowdhury expressing his party's interest in forming an alliance with the Left Front to consolidate opposition efforts against the ruling parties.
Despite this setback, there are still signs of cooperation between the Congress and the Left Front. Left Front Chairman Biman Bose announced that his coalition would not field candidates in Malda Uttar and Malda Dakshin Lok Sabha seats, leaving them for the Congress. This gesture is aimed at strengthening their united front against what Bose described as "the falsehood and lies peddled by corrupt and undemocratic TMC and the communal agenda of fascist BJP." He emphasized the necessity of a united fight to support secular democratic forces like the Congress against these "evil forces."
This strategic move by the Left Front underscores the complex dynamics of coalition politics in West Bengal. As both parties navigate these turbulent waters, their ability to present a united front against their common adversaries will be crucial in determining their success in the upcoming elections. The unfolding political scenario in West Bengal highlights the challenges and negotiations inherent in forming alliances, especially in a politically vibrant state like West Bengal.
