BJP and Congress Supporters Clash in Bhubaneswar Over Gandhi's Comments

Supporters of the BJP and Congress clashed in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday evening during a protest over remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. The incident occurred outside the state Congress headquarters where the BJP was holding a demonstration over Gandhi's comments. Stones were thrown at BJP workers, and some police personnel and journalists were also attacked, alleged state BJYM president Abhilash Panda. "We demand an unconditional apology from Rahul Gandhi for insulting and hurting Hindus," he said.

Protests Turn Violent

A complaint has been lodged at the Capital police station against Congress workers for the violence, another BJP leader stated. Besides stones, both sides also threw cow dung at each other. Cow dung was even thrown at a hoarding of Gandhi, which Congress workers later washed with milk. Police had a tough time bringing the situation under control.

In his first speech as the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Gandhi had launched a no-holds-barred attack on the BJP, accusing its leaders of dividing people on communal lines. His remarks drew massive protests from the treasury benches, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi slamming the Congress leader for calling the entire Hindu community violent. Gandhi, however, clarified that he was speaking about the BJP.

NSUI state president Yashir Nawaz commented on the situation, saying, "Every individual has the right to protest. But we have never seen a violent protest like the one organised by the BJP today." He added that those who voted for the BJP would give them a befitting reply.

When BJP supporters were staging a peaceful protest outside Congress Bhawan, stones were pelted at them. Some police personnel and journalists were also attacked during this incident, alleged state BJYM president Abhilash Panda. "We demand an unconditional apology from Rahul Gandhi for insulting and hurting Hindus," he said.

The clash between supporters of both parties escalated quickly. Stones and cow dung were thrown by both sides, leading to chaos outside the Congress headquarters. A hoarding of Gandhi was also targeted with cow dung but was later cleaned by Congress workers using milk.

Police faced significant challenges in controlling the situation as tensions ran high between both groups. The violence has led to complaints being filed against Congress workers at the Capital police station.

Gandhi's speech in Lok Sabha accused BJP leaders of dividing people along communal lines, which sparked outrage among BJP supporters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised Gandhi for his remarks, interpreting them as an attack on the Hindu community. However, Gandhi clarified that his comments were directed at the BJP.

The violent nature of Tuesday's protest was unprecedented according to NSUI state president Yashir Nawaz. He stated that while everyone has the right to protest, such violence is unacceptable and those who voted for BJP will respond appropriately.

The events in Bhubaneswar highlight ongoing tensions between India's major political parties and their supporters. The incident underscores how political discourse can quickly escalate into violence when emotions run high.

The clash outside Congress Bhawan involved not just verbal altercations but also physical attacks with stones and cow dung being used as weapons. This level of violence is rare in political protests and has drawn significant attention.

As police continue to investigate and manage fallout from Tuesday's events, both parties remain firm in their positions regarding Rahul Gandhi's remarks and their implications for communal harmony in India.
