CJI BR Gavai Hospitalised In Delhi After Contracting Severe Infection During Telangana Visit
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has been admitted to a hospital in Delhi after contracting a serious infection during a recent visit to Telangana. Although details of the infection have not been made public, sources indicate that Justice Gavai is under medical supervision and is responding well to treatment. Owing to his health condition, he did not preside over court proceedings on Monday, which marked the end of a period of partial working days.
Officials close to the matter have expressed confidence about his recovery, stating that the CJI is making steady progress and is expected to resume his official duties within the next few days.

CJI's Hyderabad Engagements Prior to Hospitalisation
Justice Gavai was in Hyderabad on July 12, where he delivered the convocation address at NALSAR University of Law. During the same visit, he also launched a special postal cover titled "Babasaheb Dr BR Ambedkar - Constituent Assembly - Constitution of India" along with a set of picture postcards themed "Art & Calligraphy in the Constitution of India."
The commemorative postal items were presented by PVS Reddy, Chief Postmaster General of Telangana, in a formal event that also featured Supreme Court Judge Justice PS Narasimha, Acting Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court Justice Sujoy Paul, Advocate General A Sudharshan Reddy, and other dignitaries.
According to an official release, the special cover and accompanying information sheet highlight the legacy of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and his pivotal role in drafting the Indian Constitution. They also feature stamps and coins issued by the Central Government in his honour.
About Chief Justice BR Gavai
Justice BR Gavai took oath as the Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. He is the second Dalit to occupy the nation's highest judicial post, following Justice KG Balakrishnan's appointment in 2007. Hailing from Amravati, Maharashtra, CJI Gavai is scheduled to retire on November 24, 2025, marking a term of a little over six months.
His father, Justice Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai, was a prominent figure in Maharashtra's political landscape. He founded the Republican Party of India (RPI) and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amravati in 1998 as the party's candidate.
