Centre Designates September 17 As Annual 'Hyderabad Liberation Day' Celebration

The announcement was made by the Centre that September 17 will be celebrated every year as 'Hyderabad Liberation Day', on Teusday.

In a notification issued by the Union Home Ministry, it was stated that Hyderabad remained under the rule of the Nizams for 13 months after India's independence on August 15, 1947.

The region was liberated from the rule of the Nizams on September 17, 1948, through police action known as 'Operation Polo'. Additionally, there has been a demand from the people of the region for celebrating September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day. The Government of India has decided to celebrate the 17th day of September each year as 'Hyderabad Liberation Day' in order to honor the martyrs who played a role in liberating Hyderabad and to instill patriotism in the youth, as stated in the notification.

When independence was achieved by India, the Razakars advocated for Hyderabad state to either join Pakistan or become a Muslim dominion while resisting its merger with the Union of India. The people of the region valiantly fought against the atrocities committed by the Razakars to merge the region into the Union of India, as reported by PTI.

The Razakars, being a private militia, committed atrocities and defended the erstwhile Nizam rule in Hyderabad. On September 17, 1948, the Hyderabad state, then under the rule of the Nizams, was annexed into the Union of India following military action initiated by the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as reported by PTI.

In the last few years, the Narendra Modi government has organized events on September 17 to commemorate 'Hyderabad Liberation Day'. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also attended the event in the past.
