Centre Blocks 5 OTT Platforms Over Obscene Content And Legal Violations
The Central Government has directed Internet Service Providers to block access to five OTT platforms after officials found that they were allegedly streaming obscene and objectionable content in violation of existing laws.
According to officials, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued blocking orders against MoodXVIP, Koyal PlayPro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu after following due legal procedure under the Information Technology Rules, 2021.

Authorities said the action was taken as part of ongoing efforts to regulate digital media platforms and ensure that online streaming services comply with legal and ethical standards. The blocked platforms were accused of hosting content considered offensive and harmful to public morality.
Legal Basis For Blocking OTT Platforms
The Ministry relied on provisions under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which allows the government to restrict access to online content in the interest of public order and national security. The blocking orders were also supported by Section 79(3)(b), which permits authorities to direct intermediaries to remove unlawful content after receiving formal notice.
Under these provisions, intermediaries such as Internet Service Providers are required to disable access to such platforms when instructed by the government.
Officials stated that the five OTT platforms were blocked after they allegedly failed to meet legal and ethical expectations laid down under the Information Technology Rules, 2021.
Earlier Action Against OTT Platforms
The latest move follows a similar crackdown carried out in July last year, when the Centre blocked 25 apps and websites accused of streaming pornographic and vulgar material. Platforms affected in that action included ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App and Desiflix.
Investigating teams reviewing those services had reported serious violations of Indian laws. Officials said several shows on these platforms lacked meaningful themes or social messaging and were dominated by explicit scenes and vulgar visuals.
Multi Agency Coordination In Decision Making
Authorities indicated that decisions related to objectionable streaming services involve consultations between multiple government bodies. In earlier cases, ministries such as Home Affairs, Women and Child Development and Electronics and Information Technology were involved in reviewing content.
Industry organisations and legal experts were also consulted as part of a coordinated effort to regulate online entertainment platforms.
Officials emphasised that OTT platforms operating in India are required to follow the country's legal framework and digital content guidelines. The latest blocking order reflects continued monitoring of streaming services and enforcement of rules against unlawful or inappropriate content.
