Centre Appoints Govind Mohan, 1989-Batch IAS Officer, As New Home Secretary
Govind Mohan, a 1989-Sikkim cadre IAS officer, has been appointed as the new Union Home by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). He will replace Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who has held the position since August 2019. Bhalla is a 1984-batch IAS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.
Mohan, who will turn 59 next month, brings extensive experience to his new role. He has served as Union Culture Secretary since October 2021 and had two previous stints in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). His tenure in the MHA includes roles as Joint Secretary from May to September 2018 and Additional Secretary from September 2018 to September 2021.

Significant Reshuffle Expected
Sources familiar with the developments have indicated that Mohan's appointment is part of a broader reshuffle at the Secretary level within the Government of India. This reshuffle is expected to involve around 10 to 12 postings across various ministries and could also affect several states.
Mohan's background includes an electrical engineering degree from BHU-IIT Varanasi. He hails from Uttar Pradesh and has been on Central Deputation since August 2017. His diverse experience in different capacities within the government makes him well-suited for his new responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities Ahead
The role of Union Home Secretary is just below that of the Cabinet Secretary in terms of seniority. It involves advising the Union Home Minister on administrative and policy matters. Mohan's appointment comes at a crucial time with upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir among other regions.
His previous roles have equipped him with valuable insights into both cultural and administrative aspects of governance. This blend of experience is expected to be beneficial as he takes on his new duties.
As Mohan steps into his new role, there is anticipation about how his leadership will influence ongoing and future policies. His extensive background in various governmental roles positions him well to navigate the complexities of this high-profile position.
The reshuffle at the Secretary level signifies a strategic move by the government to ensure effective administration across different ministries and states. With Mohan at the helm as Union Home Secretary, significant developments are expected in administrative and policy matters.
This transition marks an important phase for Mohan, who has dedicated many years to public service. His appointment reflects confidence in his ability to manage critical responsibilities effectively.
