Canada Postpones Trade Mission To India Amid Political Tensions
The Canadian trade mission to India, originally slated for October, has been deferred, according to Shanti Cosentino, a spokesperson for Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng. The spokesperson stated, "At this time, we are postponing the upcoming trade mission to India," without providing specific reasons. Nonetheless, earlier in the same month, Canada had temporarily halted discussions regarding a trade agreement with India.
This development comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau engaged in discussions on the sidelines of the G20 Summit held in New Delhi.

During their conversation on September 10, PM Modi expressed Delhi's deep concerns regarding the ongoing activities of extremist elements within Canada, which are seen as promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats while also posing threats to the Indian community residing there.
In his discussions with Trudeau, PM Modi emphasized the necessity for a relationship between the two countries that is grounded in "mutual respect and trust" to advance the India-Canada partnership.
Speaking to the media after his talks with PM Modi, Trudeau emphasized Canada's commitment to safeguarding freedom of peaceful protest while simultaneously rejecting violence and countering hatred. He stated, "Canada will always defend freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of peaceful protest, and it is extremely important to us." Trudeau further underscored the point that the actions of a few individuals should not be taken to represent the entire community or Canada as a whole.
Earlier, in June, a video circulated on social media featuring a float depicting the assassination of Indira Gandhi. This float was purportedly part of a parade organized by certain Khalistani elements in Brampton. Subsequently, in July, India summoned the Canadian envoy and issued a demarche in response to the escalating activities of pro-Khalistani groups in Canada.
