BMC Embarks on Indore Study Tour to Enhance Waste Management Practices

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has organized a study tour to Indore, Indias cleanest city, for its solid waste management personnel. The tour aims to gather insights into Indores successful waste management practices, including door-to-door waste collection, waste segregation, and public sanitation.

In an effort to improve its solid waste management practices, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has organized a study tour to Indore, Madhya Pradesh, for officers and personnel from its Solid Waste Management (SWM) department. Indore has consistently ranked first in the Swachh Survekshan, an all-India cleanliness survey, and the BMC aims to learn from Indore's successful waste management system.

BMC Takes a Page from Indores Cleanliness Playbook

The two-day study tour will take place in February or March and will include junior supervisors and engineers from the BMC's SWM department. During the tour, the participants will gather information on various aspects of Indore's waste management system, including 100% door-to-door waste collection, wet-dry garbage classification and proper disposal, public sanitation, daily waste collection, waste handling, challenges of segregation, treatment projects, the role of sanitation workers, safety in garbage handling, community participation, and other important aspects.

BMC's Waste Management Challenges

The BMC currently faces challenges in managing the city's solid waste, with an average of 6,300 metric tonnes of waste disposed at the Kanjurmarg and Deonar dumping grounds in suburban Mumbai. Additionally, 750 to 800 metric tonnes of debris is disposed at the Deonar dumping site. To address these challenges, the BMC collects and segregates solid waste at 949 centers and 47 dry waste sorting sites across the city.

Learning from Indore's Success

By studying Indore's successful waste management system, the BMC aims to adopt best practices and improve its own waste management operations. Indore's consistent top ranking in the Swachh Survekshan demonstrates the effectiveness of its waste management strategies, and the BMC hopes to replicate this success in Mumbai.

The BMC's study tour to Indore is a positive step towards improving waste management in Mumbai. By learning from Indore's experiences and adopting successful practices, the BMC can work towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable city for its residents.
