Rahul Gandhi Claims BJP Proposes Elimination of Indian Constitution in Berlin Speech

In Berlin, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of proposing the elimination of the Indian Constitution, undermining democracy and equality. He pledged to resist this political threat.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Congress leader, has accused the BJP of attempting to dismantle the Constitution, which ensures equal rights for all citizens. He pledged to establish a system of opposition resistance aimed at removing the BJP from power. During a speech at the Hertie School in Berlin, he alleged that the BJP has taken control of India's institutional framework to bolster its political influence.

Gandhi emphasised that India's democracy, being the largest and most complex globally, is a valuable global asset. He argued that any attack on India's democratic system also impacts the global democratic landscape. "What the BJP is proposing essentially is the elimination of the Constitution," he stated, highlighting concerns about equality among states, languages, and religions.

Institutional Capture and Opposition Strategy

The Congress leader criticised the BJP for allegedly weaponising institutions like the CBI and ED for political gains. He claimed these agencies have been used disproportionately against opposition members compared to BJP affiliates. Gandhi asserted that while Congress helped build these institutions for national benefit, the BJP views them as tools for political power.

In a video released by Congress, Gandhi discussed how politics involves listening and responding to democratic challenges. He stressed that the opposition must devise strategies beyond merely pointing out electoral issues. "We will deal with it, and we will create a method, a system of opposition resistance that will succeed," he said.

Economic Critique and Alliance Dynamics

Gandhi also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's economic policies, claiming they are stagnant. He argued that Modi's approach builds on Manmohan Singh's models but cannot progress further. Regarding the INDIA bloc alliance, Gandhi noted unity against RSS ideology despite tactical differences among parties.

He highlighted past election controversies, asserting that Congress had proven its victory in Haryana and questioned the fairness of Maharashtra elections. Gandhi reiterated that Indian democracy's integrity is crucial not only for India but for global democratic health.

During his Germany visit last week, Gandhi engaged with students at Hertie School, discussing India's historical achievement of forming an economic and political union in 1947 based on constitutional principles. He contrasted this with Europe's struggle to form a union.

Gandhi concluded by emphasising the need for unity among opposition parties in Parliament when contesting laws they oppose. He expressed confidence in their ability to challenge BJP policies effectively through collective action.
