AAP Alleges Underutilization of Funds by BJP MPs in Delhi

In a recent statement, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised concerns over the utilization of funds allocated for development works in constituencies represented by seven outgoing Lok Sabha Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to AAP, these MPs have left 66 per cent of their designated funds unused, a claim that contrasts with data from the official MPLAD portal which indicates nearly full expenditure of the released amounts.

AAP vs BJP Fund Utilization

AAP leader Jasmine Shah highlighted discrepancies based on data from the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. It was revealed that each of the seven BJP MPs had received Rs 124 crore over five years for constituency development. The breakdown of expenditures includes Harsh Vardhan at Rs 7.5 crore and Gautam Gambhir, Manoj Tiwari, Ramesh Bidhuri, and Meenakshi Lekhi each spending Rs 7 crore. Meanwhile, Pravesh Verma and Hans Raj Hans were reported to have spent Rs 5 crore each. Shah pointed out that a significant Rs 81 crores remained unutilized, funds which could have supported critical infrastructure projects such as CCTV installations, road and drainage system improvements, and law and order maintenance.

Further claims by Shah suggested that this pattern of underutilization was not limited to Delhi alone but was also evident in other states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana where BJP MPs reportedly spent only 50 per cent, 43 per cent, and 46 per cent of their total budgets respectively. However, the MPLAD portal presented a different picture, showing that the MPs had recommended projects exceeding their financial entitlements but managed to expend almost all the funds released by the Centre.

In response to these allegations, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor urged AAP to examine the fund utilization by their own Rajya Sabha MPs before critiquing others. Kapoor defended the BJP MPs stating that their expenditure closely matched the funds sanctioned by the Government of India.

Amidst these financial discrepancies, Shah accused the BJP MPs of neglecting their duties in Delhi, which allegedly led to six out of seven being denied tickets for re-election. He criticized the BJP's campaign focus and championed AAP as the only party committed to meaningful work in India. With all seven Delhi constituencies set to vote on May 25, Shah appealed to voters for support in favor of AAP.

This dispute over fund utilization underscores a broader debate on accountability and transparency in political funding for development projects. As Delhi prepares for the polls, these allegations may influence voter sentiment and raise questions about fiscal responsibility among elected officials.
