BJP's Devtanu Bhattacharya Joins Race for Birbhum Lok Sabha Seat Amidst Political Strategy

In a strategic move within the political landscape of West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Devtanu Bhattacharya as its second candidate for the Birbhum Lok Sabha seat. This decision comes shortly after IPS officer Debasish Dhar, who resigned from his service, was officially nominated by the party's central leadership. Bhattacharya's nomination on Thursday marks a significant step in the BJP's campaign efforts in the region.

BJP Fields Second Candidate in Birbhum

The nomination of a second candidate by the BJP is seen as a direct response to comments made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. During a public gathering in Birbhum, Banerjee highlighted that Dhar, previously relieved from his position as SP after an incident involving firing by central forces in Cooch Behar's Sitalkuchi in 2021, is still facing departmental proceedings. Despite Dhar's resignation, he has reportedly not received a release order.

Jagannath Chattopadhyay, State BJP general secretary, articulated the party's stance, stating that the nomination of Bhattacharya is a precautionary measure against potential manipulations by the ruling establishment. "We don't want to take any risk," Chattopadhyay explained, underscoring the party's determination to counteract any adversarial tactics.

Bhattacharya, expressing his commitment to the party's cause, remarked, "I will do whatever is asked from me by my party. We all are united and working together to fight the conspiracies of Trinamool." This sentiment reflects the BJP's unified approach to challenging the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the upcoming elections.

The backdrop to this political maneuvering includes Dhar being placed on compulsory waiting following the Sitalkuchi incident, which resulted in five fatalities. The Birbhum constituency is set to go to polls on May 13, with the main competition for the BJP coming from TMC candidate and incumbent MP Satabdi Roy.

This development signifies a heightened level of political engagement and strategy as parties prepare for the elections in West Bengal. The BJP's decision to nominate a second candidate for Birbhum underscores the competitive nature of electoral politics in the state and highlights the party's intent to solidify its presence and challenge its rivals effectively.
