BJP Backs John Abraham’s 'The Diplomat', Highlights Modi Government’s Role In Uzma Ahmed’s Rescue From Pakista

Uzma Ahmed was deceived into traveling to Pakistan, where she was drugged and forced into marriage. After managing to escape to the Indian High Commission, swift action was taken to ensure her safety. Now, the Bharatiya Janata Party has taken to social media to share its appreciation for John Abraham's latest film, The Diplomat. The movie, featuring Abraham as diplomat JP Singh, portrays the dramatic rescue of Uzma from Pakistan.

BJP Reveals True Story Behind The Diplomat
"India's diplomatic strength was on full display in May 2017 when the Modi government rescued Uzma Ahmed from a forced marriage in Pakistan. Recently dramatized in the John Abraham-starrer The Diplomat, this real-life operation showcased swift governance, led by former External Affairs Minister Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj and diplomat J.P. Singh, ensuring Uzma's safe return," the BJP posted on Twitter. This was followed by multiple tweets detailing the real-life incident.

BJP Backs John Abraham s The Diplomat Highlights Modi Government s Role In Uzma Ahmed s Rescue From Pakistan

"Uzma Ahmed's ordeal began when she was deceived by a Pakistani man in Malaysia and lured to Pakistan, where she was drugged, forced into marriage at gunpoint, assaulted, and held captive in Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. After returning to India, Uzma described Pakistan as a 'well of death,' stating, 'It's easy to go to Pakistan, but tough to return.'"

How the Government Helped Uzma
Trapped in Pakistan, Uzma tricked her captor, Ali, into taking her to the Indian High Commission under the pretense of collecting dowry. Once inside, she revealed her ordeal to Deputy High Commissioner J.P. Singh, who acted swiftly, ensured her safety, and informed then-External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. After verifying her Indian citizenship, Swaraj firmly declared, "Even if we have to keep her at the High Commission for a year or two, we will."

Amidst a tense legal battle, diplomat J.P. Singh fought for Uzma's legal rights, overcoming Pakistan's laws that required a husband's permission for a woman to leave the country. On May 24, 2017, the Islamabad High Court ruled in her favor. The next day, she crossed the Wagah Border, ending her three-week ordeal and marking a significant diplomatic victory for India.

A Testimony to India's Diplomatic Strength
Uzma Ahmed's rescue highlighted the Modi government's commitment to protecting Indian citizens abroad, regardless of their background. Sushma Swaraj's proactive diplomacy and J.P. Singh's swift intervention ensured Uzma's safe return. Upon reaching India, a grateful Uzma declared, "I'm proud to be Indian. Sushma madam saved me; they could've sold me!"

The BJP's post concluded with a powerful message: "This is PM Modi's India, where leadership is defined by action, diplomacy by resolve, and citizens' safety remains paramount. From Uzma's daring rescue to large-scale evacuations like Ukraine, India has proven time and again that no citizen is ever alone." As Sushma Swaraj once said, "Even if you are stuck on Mars, the Indian Embassy there will help you."

Success of The Diplomat
The film, released on March 14, has been well received by both critics and audiences. It opened with a box office collection of ₹4.03 crore on its first day at the domestic box office.
