Rising Water Levels in Bihar Rivers Prompt Alert for District Administrations

The Bihar government has urged district administrations to stay vigilant as water levels in several rivers have been rising due to continuous rainfall over the past few days. Disaster Management Department (DMD) Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Pratyaya Amrit conducted a virtual review meeting with officials from various districts to assess the situation.

Bihar Rivers Rising: Districts Alerted

According to a statement from the DMD, officials have been instructed to remain alert and fully prepared to manage any potential escalation in water levels. The rising trend in almost all rivers has resulted in the inundation of low-lying areas.

Rivers Nearing Danger Levels

The situation is particularly critical in East Champaran, Gopalganj, and West Champaran districts. Several rivers, including Gandak and Burhi Gandak, are either flowing above their danger levels or nearing them at certain points. Despite this, officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) stated that there is no alarming situation in the state so far.

In some areas of East and West Champaran districts, local administrations have relocated villagers from low-lying regions to safer places. No casualties have been reported yet.

Water Discharge Measures

Authorities in Bihar lifted some gates at the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river on Thursday. This action led to a rapid discharge of water, peaking at 2.33 lakh cusecs during the day. Similarly, 1.73 lakh cusecs of water were discharged from the Kosi Birpur barrage by 2 pm.

Rainfall over the past few days has significantly raised the water levels of several rivers, including Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Mahananda, and Kamla. Rivers are also flowing above the danger mark at certain locations in Bagaha, Purnea, Supaul, Darbhanga, Khagaria, and Jhanjharpur.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety. The state remains on high alert as efforts are made to manage the rising water levels effectively.
