Bhopal's Unique Harmony: Humans and Tigers Share the City

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated on Friday that Bhopal is unique among Indian state capitals, with humans using the roads by day and tigers by night. He made this remark while inaugurating the 39th annual convention of the Indian Association of Tour Operators, themed "Resurgent India Inbound," aimed at boosting foreign tourist visits to the state.

Bhopal: Where Tigers Roam at Night

Yadav emphasised that both humans and tigers have adapted to coexist peacefully in Bhopal. "Don't be surprised and fear not if you see a tiger strolling on Bhopal roads," he said, highlighting the state's wildlife attractions. He recalled an incident from two years ago when he was the higher education minister. During a visit to a college of excellence in Bhopal, the principal and students requested him to increase the height of the boundary wall because a tiger used to visit the premises at night.

Tourism Potential Highlighted

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also spoke at the event, pointing out the immense tourism potential of Madhya Pradesh. He stressed the need to develop more holiday destinations within India. Shekhawat noted that the growth rate of India's tourism industry was nearing 20 per cent.

Shekhawat further mentioned that India's share in global tourism stood at around 7 per cent. "We have to double it in the next five years. This is our responsibility," he asserted. His remarks underscored the importance of enhancing India's presence in the global tourism market.

Convention Participation

The convention saw participation from over 1200 tour operators, travel agents, hoteliers, and representatives from various sectors of tourism across India. The gathering aimed to discuss strategies and initiatives to attract more foreign tourists to India, particularly Madhya Pradesh.

The event's theme, "Resurgent India Inbound," reflects a focus on revitalising India's inbound tourism sector post-pandemic. The discussions centred around leveraging India's diverse attractions to draw international visitors.

Yadav's comments about Bhopal's unique coexistence between humans and tigers were intended to highlight Madhya Pradesh's rich wildlife as a significant tourist attraction. The state's efforts to promote its natural beauty and wildlife are part of broader strategies to boost tourism.

The convention provided a platform for stakeholders in the tourism industry to collaborate and share insights on improving India's appeal as a tourist destination. The aim was to create more opportunities for growth and development within the sector.

The focus on increasing foreign tourist footfall aligns with India's broader goals of enhancing its global tourism share. By developing new destinations and improving existing ones, India aims to attract a larger number of international visitors.

The event highlighted both the challenges and opportunities within India's tourism sector. It underscored the need for innovative approaches to attract tourists while preserving cultural and natural heritage.

The convention concluded with a call for collective efforts from all stakeholders to achieve the goal of doubling India's share in global tourism over the next five years. The emphasis was on sustainable growth that benefits both local communities and the national economy.
