Berhampur University Vice Chancellor Geetanjali Dash Defrauded of Rs 14 Lakh by Cybercriminal

Geetanjali Dash, Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University, fell victim to a cyber fraud involving Rs 14 lakh. A scammer, posing as an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer, claimed she was under digital arrest. The incident came to light when Dash received a call on February 12 from someone alleging her involvement in an ED case due to large sums deposited in her name.

VC Geetanjali Dash Loses Rs 14 Lakh to Fraud

The caller demanded Rs 14 lakh for her release from the supposed digital arrest. Dash complied and transferred the money to an account specified by the fraudster. Berhampur SP Saravan Vivek confirmed that a complaint was lodged at the cyber police station on February 24, initiating an investigation into the matter.

Cyber Fraud Investigation Underway

The police are actively investigating the case to identify those responsible for the fraud. SP Saravan Vivek assured that efforts are being made to trace the culprits involved in deceiving the vice chancellor. The investigation aims to uncover the identities of those behind this fraudulent scheme.

Dash recounted that during the call, the impersonator spoke in English and mentioned details about her family. This tactic was likely used to gain her trust. The caller insisted she needed to clear her bank account for an audit related to the ongoing case against her.

Scammer's Tactics and Victim's Realisation

To further convince Dash, the fraudster refunded Rs 80,000 to her account the following day, promising that the rest would be returned in stages. However, when communication ceased, Dash realised she had been duped and subsequently filed a First Information Report (FIR).

The incident highlights the sophisticated methods employed by cybercriminals to exploit individuals. Authorities urge vigilance against such scams and advise verifying any suspicious claims before taking action.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity awareness and caution when dealing with unexpected financial demands over phone calls or digital communications.
