Pixxel Launches Three High-Resolution Hyperspectral Satellites to Enhance Climate Insights
Pixxel, a startup from Bengaluru, has successfully launched three high-resolution hyperspectral satellites. These satellites, part of the Firefly constellation, were launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The launch was facilitated by Exolaunch and took place aboard SpaceX's Transporter-12 rideshare mission around 1 am. Pixxel hosted a live screening of the event at its Bengaluru headquarters.

Founder and CEO Awais Ahmed highlighted that these satellites would provide precise climate and Earth insights. He noted that the Firefly constellation offers six times sharper resolution than most existing hyperspectral satellites, capturing details previously unseen. This launch marks India's first commercial satellite constellation, a significant milestone in the country's space journey.
Firefly's Advanced Capabilities
The Firefly satellites boast a five-metre resolution, capturing intricate details for the first time. Ahmed mentioned that Pixxel already serves over 60 clients, including NASA and governments in the US and Australia. The advanced resolution is complemented by data capture across more than 150 spectral bands, allowing detection of subtle changes in chemical compositions, vegetation health, water quality, and atmospheric conditions with unmatched precision.
Kshitij Khandelwal, Pixxel's founder and CTO, explained that while traditional Earth observation satellites use broader spectral bands, Firefly's narrowband sensors reveal hidden patterns crucial for applications like agriculture and climate action. However, selling this data to the Indian government poses challenges due to procurement rules requiring multiple bidders.
Post-Launch Operations
Following the successful launch, CTO Khandelwal noted potential challenges in the coming days despite thorough preparations. Communication with the satellite was expected to begin between 6-7 am on Wednesday. Once established, commissioning various spacecraft components would take about a week before operating the camera to capture images for calibration.
Ahmed shared plans for launching three more Firefly satellites in March. Pixxel's journey began in April 2022 with Shakuntala, India's first private Earth-imaging hyperspectral satellite. He emphasised that understanding our planet deeply today is crucial for its future. The deployment of these commercial satellites is pivotal for Pixxel and represents a significant step towards using space technology to tackle global challenges.
