Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy Advocates for Police to Balance Sympathy for Victims and Toughness Against Criminals

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy emphasised the importance of police being compassionate towards those seeking justice while ensuring criminals fear law enforcement. Speaking at an event by the state Home Department during the Congress government's first anniversary, he clarified that friendly policing should not extend to murderers, economic offenders, and land grabbers.

Telangana CM Calls for Tougher Police Approach

Reddy highlighted that the concept of friendly policing needs redefinition. He stated, "Criminals should be scared of the police. Land grabbers, drug offenders, those who illegally occupy water bodies, and criminal-minded persons should be fearful of police. Frighten such people and be friendly with victims seeking justice. Respect for police goes up then."

Addressing Crime and Justice

The Chief Minister referred to the recent arrest of BRS MLA P Kaushik Reddy for allegedly obstructing and threatening a police officer. He stressed that police should remain firm against those who disrespect them. He also noted that officers must adhere to rules even when dealing with influential offenders.

Reddy observed that conviction rates in drug-related cases are notably low. To address this, he mentioned the government's plan to expedite trials for drug and cybercrime cases through fast-track courts. This approach aims to enhance the efficiency of the judicial process in these areas.

Combating Narcotics in Educational Institutions

The Chief Minister underscored the need to tackle narcotics issues in schools and colleges. He suggested appointing specially trained personnel to handle drug-related concerns and identify behavioural changes in students. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to curb drug abuse among young people.

Reddy warned educational institutions about strict government action if they fail to cooperate with authorities in addressing narcotics problems. The police have communicated this stance to school and college managements, urging their active participation in combating drug-related issues.

Inclusivity in Traffic Management

During the event, Reddy handed over enrolment papers to transgender individuals selected temporarily for traffic management roles. This move highlights the government's commitment to inclusivity and providing opportunities for marginalised communities within public service sectors.

The Chief Minister's remarks reflect a broader effort to redefine policing strategies in Telangana. By focusing on both compassion for victims and strictness towards offenders, the government aims to enhance public trust and safety across the state.
