Manipur Government Calls on Mizoram CM to Foster Unity Instead of Division
The Manipur government has criticised Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma for his remarks, urging him to act as a good neighbour instead of inciting division. The statement from Manipur emphasised the need for India to be cautious of attempts to create a Kuki-Chin Christian nation across Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh. It stressed that such efforts have been meticulously planned over decades and should not lead to the fragmentation of Northeast India.

Concerns Over Border Fencing
Lalduhoma's recent interview with Hindustan Times sparked controversy. He suggested that President's Rule in Manipur would be better than the current administration under N Biren Singh. He also opposed border fencing between India and Myanmar, arguing it wouldn't stop smuggling, similar to issues faced along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The Mizoram government has consistently resisted central efforts to fence its borders with Myanmar, citing concerns over illegal immigration and trafficking.
The Manipur government attributed the ongoing crisis in the state to illegal immigrants from Myanmar. It claimed these immigrants were affected by Chief Minister Singh's anti-drug campaign, which targeted illicit poppy cultivation. The statement refuted allegations of anti-tribal policies, accusing Lalduhoma of spreading false narratives about Manipur's history and culture.
Drug Trafficking Issues
Manipur highlighted its success in combating drug trafficking, seizing drugs worth Rs 60,000 crore since 2017. The state's collaboration with central agencies has significantly reduced drug transit within Manipur. In contrast, Mizoram is now seen as a key route for illegal arms and drugs between India and Myanmar. The statement urged Lalduhoma to focus on addressing drug threats in Mizoram rather than criticising Manipur's actions.
The statement also pointed out the increase in villages in Kuki-dominated hill districts of Manipur. It suggested Lalduhoma recall Mizoram's past instructions to Myanmar nationals about land purchases due to similar concerns over resources. The Manipur government reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and normalcy, providing aid to over 60,000 people in relief camps and conducting operations to recover looted arms.
Historical Context and Regional Stability
Manipur's statement highlighted its rich cultural history compared to Mizoram, which was formed from Assam only a few decades ago. It warned against attempts to push illegal Kuki-Chin immigrants from Mizoram into Manipur for land acquisition and creating a "Greater Mizoram." The government vowed not to allow any fragmentation of Northeast India due to foreign or secessionist interests.
Efforts by the N Biren Singh-led government focus on maintaining peace and stability in Manipur. The administration continues providing essential services to those displaced by ongoing conflicts. Combing operations are actively recovering arms stolen from police armouries, showcasing progress towards restoring order.
The statement concluded by urging Lalduhoma to demonstrate better statesmanship by fostering neighbourly relations rather than fuelling discord. Despite repeated attempts, the Mizoram government was unavailable for comment on these developments.
