Maharashtra Government Claims Police Acted in Self-Defence in Badlapur Case Shooting Incident

Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that police shot Akshay Shinde in self-defence. Akshay, accused of sexually assaulting two minors at a school where he worked, was being transported for investigation. During transit, he allegedly seized a policeman's gun and fired, prompting police to retaliate. The incident has sparked controversy and criticism from opposition parties.

Opposition Questions Police Actions

Opposition leaders have raised doubts about the incident's circumstances. They questioned whether it was an attempt to destroy evidence in a case that had garnered national attention. Vijay Wadettiwar, Leader of Opposition, demanded a judicial investigation, questioning how Akshay could access a gun if his hands were restrained. He expressed distrust in the Badlapur police's handling of the case.

Shiv Sena UBT spokesperson Sushma Andhare compared this incident to the 2019 Telangana case where four rape accused were killed by police claiming self-defence. Andhare questioned whether Akshay was hiding more sinister secrets and why the school management remains unaccounted for. She also criticised Deputy CM Fadnavis for not addressing these concerns adequately.

Calls for Judicial Inquiry

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole called for an inquiry by a sitting High Court judge to uncover all facts. He expressed scepticism about whether Akshay committed suicide or was killed, criticising the government's inability to protect girls and deliver justice. Patole also pointed out inefficiencies within the Maharashtra police under DGP Rashmi Shukla.

In a post on X, Shiv Sena UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray described the incident as reckless and suspicious. He questioned who might be protecting the school management board directors and suggested a neutral inquiry into the matter. Thackeray warned against political exploitation of the situation.

Government Defends Police Actions

Chief Minister Shinde responded to opposition allegations by highlighting their previous demands for Akshay's execution. He condemned their current stance as politically motivated and insensitive. Shinde attributed these allegations to opposition parties' discomfort with his government's Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme's success.

Deputy CM Fadnavis reiterated that police acted in self-defence when Akshay fired at them. He emphasised that police were investigating allegations made by Akshay's ex-wife. Fadnavis criticised opposition parties for questioning police actions when they previously demanded severe punishment for Akshay.

Legal Perspectives on Incident

NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar demanded an in-depth inquiry into the actions of the Home Department during Akshay's transfer from Taloja Jail. Ujjwal Nikam, who served as public prosecutor in cases against Akshay, noted sufficient evidence against him in submitted documents. Nikam suggested that Akshay might have attempted suicide due to this evidence and supported a judicial probe to reveal the truth.

The two minor victims had already identified Akshay, and Maharashtra police had gathered additional evidence against him. When asked if it was an encounter, Nikam advised against jumping to conclusions without further investigation.

The incident has ignited debates over law enforcement practices and political motivations, with calls for thorough investigations to ensure justice is served appropriately.
