Zubeen Garg Death: Assam CM Orders Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma To Face CID

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that lookout notices have been issued for Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma. Mahanta is the organiser of the North East Festival, while Sharma manages singer Zubeen Garg. Their financial accounts have been frozen as part of ongoing investigations. The Chief Minister urged them to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by October 6, warning of intensified police action if they fail to comply.

The Chief Minister emphasised that Assam should not mirror Nepal's recent political unrest. Earlier this year, Nepal experienced violent protests following social media restrictions imposed by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's government. Mr Sarma stressed that Assam must avoid similar instability. He invoked historical figures like Lachit Borphukan and Dr Bhupen Hazarika to highlight Assam's resilience and cultural pride.

Justice for Zubeen Garg

Zubeen Garg, a beloved cultural figure in Assam, passed away on September 19 in Singapore, reportedly due to drowning. His death has sparked widespread mourning and protests across the state. The Assam CID is investigating the circumstances surrounding his demise. Mr Sarma acknowledged public anger but urged trust in state institutions to deliver justice.

The Chief Minister stated that all individuals connected to Zubeen's death would face legal scrutiny. "We assure everyone that justice will be done," he said, urging citizens to maintain law and order during the investigation process. Mr Sarma also warned against using Zubeen's tragedy for anti-government politics, cautioning against groups attempting to incite unrest.

Financial Measures and Future Events

Officials confirmed that Mahanta's bank accounts and credit facilities have been frozen, along with those of Siddharth Sharma. This decision aims to prevent them from staying abroad during the inquiry. "This is a masterstroke by the government," Mr Sarma remarked, asserting they must face the investigation.

The state government will no longer fund events organised by Mahanta, who led the North East Festival in Singapore where Zubeen performed before his death. The Chief Minister highlighted that delivering justice for Zubeen is crucial for maintaining public trust ahead of future elections.

SIT sources revealed that summons have been issued to several individuals linked to the case, including Devjyoti Hazarika and Tanmay Phukan from Singapore, among others. They are required to appear in Guwahati by October 6 as part of ongoing investigations into Zubeen Garg's death.

Mr Sarma expressed readiness to make personal sacrifices if necessary to prevent instability in Assam. He reiterated his commitment to upholding law and order while ensuring justice for Zubeen Garg remains a priority for his administration.
