Assam Moves to Protect Indigenous Rights with Clause 6 Panel Recommendations

The Assam cabinet has resolved to implement 57 out of 67 recommendations from the Justice Biplab Sarma committee concerning Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this decision during a press conference in Lakhimpur. The cabinet's deliberations focused on protecting the land, language, and culture of Assam's indigenous people.

Assam Enacts Indigenous Safeguards

Clause 6 of the Assam Accord promises constitutional, legislative, and administrative measures to preserve the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of Assamese people. "A decision has been taken to implement 85 per cent of the recommendations and we will take up the remaining with the central government as these fall within its purview," Sarma stated.

Implementation Timeline

The state government aims to implement these 57 recommendations by April 15, 2025. Sarma highlighted that this initiative is one of the most significant efforts since Independence to protect Assam's people's rights. The recommendations set for implementation will be announced in Guwahati within three to four days.

The Group of Ministers will engage with the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and other organisations to discuss these matters further. This collaborative approach aims to ensure comprehensive protection for Assam's indigenous population.

Additional Measures

Beyond the committee's recommendations, the state government has already started taking extra steps to safeguard the interests of indigenous communities. These measures underscore the government's commitment to preserving Assam's unique cultural heritage.

"The state government has already initiated measures beyond the recommendations of the committee to safeguard the interest of the indigenous population," Sarma added. This proactive stance aims to address any gaps left by the committee's suggestions.

In conclusion, implementing these recommendations marks a historic milestone for Assam. It represents a significant effort to uphold and protect the rights and heritage of its people.
