ASI Discovers Ancient Lord Shiva Temple And 19 Wells In Sambhal: A Historic Archaeological Find

Sambhal: In a groundbreaking discovery, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has unearthed an ancient Lord Shiva temple, five 'teerths' (sacred spots), and 19 wells in Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh.

The survey, conducted by a four-member ASI team, was part of an extensive inspection launched by the district administration, covering approximately 24 locations over 8-10 hours.

Sambhal: A Hidden Treasure Unearthed

The discovery was made earlier this month during an anti-encroachment drive near the Shahi Jama Masjid. Officials stumbled upon the temple, which is believed to be the Shri Kartik Mahadev Temple, also referred to as the Bhasma Shankar Temple. The temple had been closed since 1978, following communal riots that displaced Hindu families in the area.

On December 13, 2024, the temple was reopened for prayers, marking the end of decades of obscurity. Alongside the temple, ASI officials also found broken idols of Hindu deities, further fueling the historical intrigue surrounding the site.

ASI Investigation and Future Plans

District Magistrate Dr. Rajender Pensiya shared details of the survey, stating, "The ASI team inspected five teerths and 19 wells, in addition to the newly found temple. The survey lasted about 8-10 hours."

To determine the temple's historical significance, the district administration has requested carbon dating of the temple and wells. A comprehensive report by the ASI is expected to shed light on the site's age and cultural relevance.

Regional Tensions and Security Measures

The discovery has not been without controversy. Clashes erupted during a court-ordered survey of the nearby Shahi Jama Masjid, leading to the deaths of five individuals and injuries to 20 police officers. As a precaution, police forces have been stationed at the site to ensure security.
