Three Ancient Idols Discovered During Excavation At Temple In Sambhal

Three small idols, each measuring between four and six inches, were discovered during well excavation near the Bhasma Shankar temple in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal. The temple, which had been closed for 46 years, reopened on December 13. Officials revealed that two of these idols seem to represent Goddesses Parvati and Lakshmi, although they were found damaged.

The well is located approximately 10 metres from the Bhasma Shankar temple, which contains a Lord Hanuman idol and a shivling. This temple had been locked since 1978 due to communal riots that led to the displacement of Hindu families in the area. Authorities rediscovered it during an anti-encroachment operation in Sambhal.

Idols Unearthed During Well Excavation

Veerpal Singh, a labourer involved in the well digging, mentioned that the idols were uncovered at a depth of around 20 feet. "The idols have been handed over to the local administration," he told India Today TV. The discovery has prompted local authorities to take further action regarding the site's historical significance.

In response to these findings, the Sambhal administration has contacted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for carbon dating of both the temple and the well. District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya stated, "We have written a letter to ASI about carbon dating of the temple and the well." Security measures have been enhanced with guards and CCTV cameras installed at the site.

Community Remembers Historical Temple

The reopening of this temple has stirred memories among locals who witnessed its closure decades ago. Vishnu Shankar Rastogi, an 82-year-old resident, shared his experiences: "I have lived in Khaggu Sarai since my birth. After the 1978 riots, our community was forced to migrate from the area."

During an anti-encroachment campaign near the mosque, several locals gathered at the temple site to observe as workers unearthed these ancient idols. This campaign aims not only to remove encroachments but also to curb power theft in areas surrounding significant landmarks like mosques.

The temple's proximity to Shahi Jama Masjid is notable; this mosque was a site of violence on November 24 during protests against a court-ordered survey. The administration continues efforts to manage encroachments while ensuring historical sites are preserved for future generations.

As puja ceremonies resume at this historic Kartik Mahadev temple, its rediscovery marks a significant moment for those who remember its past importance within their community.
