Ashok Patil To Be A 'Giant Killer'; Here's How Mahayuti Alliance Changing The Game In Bhandup

The Bhandup West Assembly Constituency in North East Mumbai is a focal point in the Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024. Shiv Sena Eknath Shinde fraction has fielded Ashok Patil from this seat. Initially, there was speculation about MNS youth leader Amit Thackeray running from Bhandup, but he chose Mahim instead. This decision has led to a face-off between two Shiv Sena factions: Ramesh Korgaonkar from the Thackeray group and Ashok Patil from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena.

This constituency has been a Shiv Sena stronghold for over ten years. However, political dynamics are shifting due to the Sena's split, MNS's withdrawal, and BJP's rising influence. With nearly 300,000 voters, Bhandup is home to diverse linguistic and religious communities. Yet, it faces infrastructure challenges like narrow roads causing traffic jams, lack of a government hospital, insufficient recreational facilities, and poor waste disposal systems.

Infrastructure Challenges and Political Dynamics

These infrastructure issues have led to dissatisfaction with the current MLA's performance in addressing basic amenities. This discontent has created an opportunity for the grand alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena Shinde faction, and NCP's Ajit Pawar group to gain traction. The alliance aims to leverage its unity as a strength in this politically crucial constituency.

Ashok Patil represents the Shiv Sena Shinde group and previously served as an MLA in 2014. He is known for tackling many local issues during his tenure. Patil is expected to challenge incumbent MLA Ramesh Korgaonkar from the Thackeray faction. Korgaonkar has faced criticism for not adequately addressing key concerns such as slum rehabilitation, healthcare, road conditions, and sanitation.

Grand Alliance Strategies

The grand alliance is banking on its cohesive strategy to sway voters. The BJP has unveiled promises like financial assistance of 2100 rupees for women and loan waivers for farmers to garner support among Bhandup's diverse electorate. Despite other candidates from parties like MNS, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, BSP, and independents being present, many believe that the grand alliance's unity might tip the scales in their favour.

This election battle in Bhandup West is more than just a contest between former MLAs; it reflects broader political realignments and voter reactions to governance issues. The outcome will reveal how effective the grand alliance's unity is and how local issues influence voter sentiment in this key constituency.
