Sultanpur Police Detain Four for Alleged Illegal Conversions to Christianity

Authorities arrested four individuals for allegedly converting people to Christianity by exploiting superstitions and promising to treat ailments, police reported on Monday. The arrests occurred in Sultanpur district, where the accused were reportedly targeting poor Dalit community members and children with false promises.

Four Held for Illegal Conversions

Police Circle Officer Lambhua Abdus Salam stated that they received a tip-off about illegal conversion activities at Achhelal's residence in Pakhrauli village, under the Kotwali Dehat police station. "We received information that Achhelal's house was involved in unauthorized conversion activities under the pretence of traditional healing practices," Salam said.

Illegal Conversion Activities

Upon investigation, it was discovered that Kanhaiyalal, son of Chhotelal from Bhadiyan, Lambhua, was orchestrating the conversions. Salam mentioned that Achhelal and his accomplices were exploiting the superstitions of poor Dalits, children, and adults by promising to cure their illnesses and fulfil other desires.

The accused were identified as Achhelal, Rajiv Kumar, Mukesh, and Subhash Kumar. They were charged under section 351 criminal intimidation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, among other laws.

Judicial Custody

Salam confirmed that all four accused were produced in a local court and subsequently sent to judicial custody. "We are conducting further investigations and taking additional legal actions as necessary," he added.

Additionally, two other individuals, Kanhaiyalal and Raju, who were previously arrested and are currently in judicial custody, were found to have connections with similar conversion networks in other districts.

The police raid on Sunday led to the arrests after authorities confirmed that the accused were luring people with false promises before converting them to Christianity. This operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb illegal religious conversions in the region.

The investigation continues as authorities aim to dismantle these networks and prevent further exploitation of vulnerable communities. The police are committed to ensuring justice for those affected by these unlawful activities.
