Indian Army as a Melting Pot: General Dwivedi Highlights Harmony Between Kukis and Meiteis
The Indian Army serves as a unifying force, according to General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff. He highlighted that members from the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur work together harmoniously within the same units. This statement comes amidst ongoing ethnic tensions between these communities in Manipur since last year.

General Dwivedi delivered a lecture titled "Role and Contribution of Indian Army in Securing India's Growth Story" under the General BC Joshi Memorial Lecture Series. He emphasized the discipline and knowledge instilled in young recruits, known as Agniveers. The lecture was organised by the Department of Defence & Strategic Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University.
Indian Army's Role in National Integration
During his address, General Dwivedi discussed the Indian Army's significant role in integrating over 600 princely states, including Hyderabad and Goa, into India. He noted that the Army's socio-cultural values are robust, acting as a melting pot for diverse communities across the nation.
He also mentioned how the Army has transformed Jammu and Kashmir from a region associated with terrorism to one known for tourism. This transformation is part of the Army's broader efforts to maintain internal security in regions like Jammu and Kashmir and the North-east.
Army's Apolitical and Areligious Nature
The Army chief reiterated that the force remains apolitical and areligious, drawing personnel from every district across India. Hindi serves as a common language that binds these diverse groups together. An example of this unity is seen at Siachen base, where all religious symbols coexist under one roof.
General Dwivedi highlighted how veterans from Kuki and Meitei communities have worked to ease tensions in Manipur. Their efforts have helped restore trust between these groups, showcasing the Army's role in fostering camaraderie and reducing divisions.
Future Preparations for Olympics 2036
Looking ahead, General Dwivedi spoke about India's bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036. The Indian Army is preparing for this event under "Mission 2032," focusing on developing adequate manpower to support the games' successful conduct.
The Indian Army's commitment to national integration and unity continues to play a crucial role in addressing regional conflicts and preparing for future global events. By fostering harmony among diverse communities, it strengthens India's social fabric while contributing to its growth story.
