Amid Tensions Over Pahalgam Incident, India Bans All Imports From Pakistan

In yet another move against Pakistan, India has banned all imports from the neighbouring country with immediate effect, a notification of the commerce ministry said.

Direct & Indirect Products

The government has said that the ban applies to all products in transit from Pakistan in view of the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack in Kashmir. "Direct or indirect Import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect, until further orders.

This restriction is imposed in the interest of national security and public policy. Any exception to this prohibition shall require prior approval of the Government of India," the Commerce Ministry notification read.

The development comes as the Wagah-Attari border, the sole trade route between India and Pakistan, is shut in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack.

Deadliest Attack Since 2019

India has taken several major decisions to cut ties with Pakistan over the terrorist attack, the deadliest incident since the abrogation of Article 370. It has downgraded relations with Islamabad and sent back Pakistani nationals by cancelling all their visas, last week.

It has suspended the Indus Water Treaty. In retaliation, Islamabad has cancelled the Simla treaty and all agreements with New Delhi. Last week, it shut the airspace for the Indian flights.

In retaliation, India has also closed airspace for Pakistani flights, even as the US and other countries have urged both countries to de-escalate tensions.

However, Pakistan has said that it is open to a joint probe on the Pahalgam attack.
The United States is hoping that India's response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack will not lead to broader regional conflict between New Delhi and Islamabad, US Vice President JD Vance said on Thursday.

"Our hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn't lead to a broader regional conflict," Reuters quoted Vance as saying in an interview on Fox News' "Special Report with Bret Baier" show.
