Three Dead in Almora Forest Fire, Nainital Engulfed by Smog

Tragedy struck a pine resin factory in Almora, Uttarakhand, as three labourers from Nepal succumbed to burn injuries sustained during an attempt to extinguish a forest fire that had encroached upon the factory premises. This incident occurred on Thursday, highlighting the severe impact of forest fires in the region. An additional labourer is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries related to the same event, according to a daily bulletin from the forest department.

Almora Fire Kills Three, Nainital Smoggy

The labourers, who were not part of the official firefighting teams, encountered the blaze in the Gananath range of Almora's forest division. Efforts to control the fire near their workplace resulted in severe burn injuries, necessitating urgent care at the base hospital in Almora. This tragic event underscores the dangers posed by forest fires to life and property.

Meanwhile, Nainital, a popular tourist destination, is grappling with smog and rising air pollution due to ongoing forest fires. Visibility has been significantly reduced across areas from Nainital to Haldwani, posing health risks to residents and visitors alike. Dr. MS Dugtal, a senior physician at a government hospital, expressed concern over the potential increase in respiratory problems among vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly. He emphasized the importance of regular medication for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions and recommended the use of air purifiers and face masks as preventive measures.

The forest department's data reveals a worrying trend of forest fires in Uttarakhand. Over the last 24 hours alone, 64 new incidents were reported, destroying approximately 74.67 hectares of forest land. Since November 1 of the previous year, the state has witnessed 868 fire incidents, resulting in over 1,000 hectares of forest land being gutted. The Kumaon region has been particularly hard-hit, with 456 incidents reported, followed by Garhwal with 344 incidents.

The ongoing crisis highlights the urgent need for effective fire management strategies and increased awareness among local communities about the risks and preventive measures associated with forest fires. The loss of life and environmental damage underscore the challenges faced by Uttarakhand in combating these natural disasters.
