All Systems Go: India Steps Up Civil Defence Preparedness Amidst Rising Tensions With Pakistan
Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Government of India has directed states to intensify civil defence preparedness. In a significant move, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked multiple states to conduct nationwide mock drills on May 7, focusing on urban and strategic preparedness in case of a hostile attack.
According to government sources, the following key measures are to be undertaken during the drills:

Operationalization of Air Raid Warning Sirens across cities and sensitive zones to ensure timely alerts in the event of an aerial or ground threat.
Training sessions for civilians and students on how to protect themselves and respond effectively during emergencies, especially in high-risk regions.
Implementation of crash black-out protocols-measures to minimise light visibility in urban areas at night to avoid detection from aerial surveillance or attacks.
Camouflaging of vital infrastructure and installations, such as power plants, military bases, and communication hubs to reduce visibility and vulnerability.
Rehearsal and updating of evacuation plans, particularly in border states, to ensure rapid and coordinated civilian movement if needed.
These instructions, issued on the backdrop of heightened India-Pakistan tensions, show how the government is focusing on not just strategic and military response, but also public readiness and civil safety.
By involving local authorities and communities, India is sending a clear message: any threat to national security will be met with comprehensive preparedness-both from its armed forces and its people.
