Akhilesh Yadav Calls Sambhal Violence A 'Well-Planned Conspiracy' In Parliament

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav has raised serious concerns about the violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, calling it a "well-planned conspiracy" orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies.

Speaking in Parliament on December 3, 2024, Yadav emphasized that the incident had damaged the communal harmony in the region and warned that the narrative surrounding alleged excavations in mosques would only deepen divisions in the country, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The Sambhal Incident: A Deliberate Disruption

Yadav's comments were in response to the violence that erupted in Sambhal on November 24, 2024. The violence followed a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, which some believed was built on the ruins of an ancient temple. The survey team was attacked by a mob, resulting in four deaths and numerous injuries. Yadav argued that the BJP's focus on such narratives was a deliberate attempt to divert attention from other pressing national issues and to sow discord within the country.

"This incident in Sambhal is part of a well-thought-out conspiracy. The BJP and its allies are creating a divisive atmosphere by spreading false narratives about excavations in mosques," Yadav stated in the Lok Sabha. "Such actions will destroy the brotherhood and unity that have long been the foundation of our nation," as reported by ANI.

Allegations of Bias in Sambhal Administration

Yadav also criticized the local administration in Sambhal for allegedly siding with the BJP. He accused the officers of acting as BJP sympathizers, claiming that their actions were biased and contributed to the unrest.

"The officers in Sambhal are behaving like BJP workers, arbitrarily making decisions that have led to this violence. The situation in Sambhal was engineered as part of a broader strategy to distract the public from real issues," Yadav said. He further warned that such moves could lead to a breakdown of peace and unity in the country, as per ANI reports.

The Tragic Day in Sambhal

The Sambhal violence unfolded when a team of officials, accompanied by police, conducted a court-ordered survey of the mosque. The survey was the result of a petition claiming that the mosque stood atop an ancient temple. As the officials arrived, the local residents, unaware of the survey's intent, feared that the mosque was being desecrated. Tensions escalated, and a mob began throwing stones at the survey team.

The situation quickly spiralled out of control, with police firing on the crowd. Four individuals were killed, and dozens were injured in the violence. Yadav pointed out that the incident could have been avoided if the situation had been handled with more sensitivity. He claimed that the police's heavy-handed approach, including the deployment of large forces in the area without informing the public, only fueled the unrest.

The Bigger Picture: A Strategy to Divert Attention?

In his speech, Akhilesh Yadav linked the violence in Sambhal to the broader political environment in Uttar Pradesh. He suggested that the BJP's actions were intended to distract from other issues, including the controversial elections in the state. Yadav claimed that during the previous elections, police in neighbouring districts had prevented people from casting their votes, and the violence in Sambhal was a strategy to shift public attention away from these concerns, as reported by Hindustan Times.

"The police opened fire, and now we have deaths and injuries to show for it. This was not just about the mosque; it was about a larger plan to divert attention from the real issues in Uttar Pradesh," Yadav added.

Reaction to Arrests in Bangladesh

Yadav also voiced concerns about the recent arrest of a Hindu monk, Chinmoy Krishna Das, in Bangladesh on charges of sedition. He criticized the Indian government for not taking stronger action in defence of its religious figures.

"The government should think about such incidents. If they claim to be a strong government, then they should respect our saints and protect them from such unjust actions," Yadav remarked, reflecting his concerns over the safety of Indian citizens abroad.

Ram Gopal Yadav's Account of the Sambhal Incident

Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha MP, Ram Gopal Yadav, also gave his account of the Sambhal violence. He claimed that the mob had misunderstood the intentions of the survey team, fearing that the mosque was about to be vandalized. He explained that when the police began opening a water tank near the mosque, the situation escalated as people feared something was amiss. The police response, which included the use of force, led to the tragic loss of life, as per ANI reports.

Ram Gopal Yadav further alleged that the police fired without provocation, resulting in the deaths of innocent people. He also drew parallels between the violence in Sambhal and alleged election irregularities in Uttar Pradesh, suggesting that the violence was part of a broader strategy to deflect attention from these issues.

Conclusion

The Sambhal violence has stirred political debate, with Akhilesh Yadav and his party accusing the BJP of orchestrating a divisive narrative that undermines communal harmony. While the authorities investigate the incident, Yadav's allegations highlight growing concerns over the political climate in Uttar Pradesh and the role of state institutions in maintaining law and order. The incident in Sambhal serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance required in handling sensitive communal matters and the consequences when that balance is disrupted.
