Afghanistan Permanently Shuts Down Embassy In Delhi, Cites Persistent 'Challenges' From Indian Govt
Afghanistan has declared the permanent shutdown of its embassy in New Delhi, citing "continuing difficulties from the Indian government" as the primary cause. This decision comes after the embassy's operations ceased on September 30, a move initiated by Afghanistan with the expectation that the Indian government's position would improve, allowing for the embassy's normal functioning to continue.
"The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in New Delhi regrets to announce the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission in New Delhi, effective from 23 November 2023, owing to persistent challenges from the Indian government," the embassy said in a statement.

The embassy expressed disappointment that despite an eight-week waiting period, the intended goals of visa extensions for diplomats and a change in the Indian government's approach were not achieved. "Facing consistent pressure from both the Taliban and the Indian government to relinquish control, the embassy found itself in a challenging position," it stated.

Recognising India as a longstanding strategic partner of the former Afghan Republic since 2001, the embassy acknowledged the complexities and concerns that govern the realm of practical politics and the need for a delicate balancing act, especially in a geopolitically sensitive region. Thus, it firmly asserted that the decision to close the mission in India at this juncture and transfer the mission's authority to the host country aligns with Afghanistan's best interests, as outlined in the statement.
The embassy expressed gratitude and solidarity toward Afghan citizens in India, acknowledging their understanding and support throughout the mission's tenure.
Despite resource limitations, the embassy highlighted its relentless efforts for the Afghan community's welfare, particularly in the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul. Over the past two years and three months, the Afghan community in India has experienced a notable decline, with Afghan refugees, students, and traders departing the country. Since August 2021, the number has nearly halved, accompanied by minimal issuance of new visas during this period, the embassy disclosed.
