AAP needs Lt Governor's nod to govern capital: SC

The observation came on a petition by the AAP government against a court verdict that held the Lieutenant Governor was the national capital's boss.

A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday observed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi needs the Lieutenant Governor's nod to govern the national capital, but the LG cannot sit on files beyond a reasonable period.

A five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court today commenced the hearing on petitions related to power tussle between Delhi's Arvind Kejriwal government and the Centre.

The observation came on a petition by the AAP government against a court verdict that held the Lieutenant Governor was the national capital's boss.

Gopal Subramanium, representing Delhi government told Supreme Court that it has limited power and should be given more power.

During the day, Gopal Subramaniam, told that "an elected government cannot be without any power".

The argument of the Delhi government to continue on Tuesday.

The bench comprises of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan. Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium is now arguing for the Delhi Government.

After hearing the matter for more than five months, a two-judge bench of the apex court had on February 25 referred to a constitution bench all the petitions.
