AAP Calls for Nationwide Protests Against Delhi CM Kejriwal's Arrest

New Delhi, March 21 - The political landscape of India witnessed a significant turn of events as the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Delhi unit convenor, Gopal Rai, announced a nationwide protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) apprehended Kejriwal in connection with an excise policy-linked money-laundering case, marking a historic moment as it is the first instance of a sitting chief minister being arrested. This development came shortly after the Delhi High Court declined to offer Kejriwal protection from any coercive action by the federal agency.

Nationwide Protests for Kejriwal

Rai, also a minister in the Delhi government, described Kejriwal's arrest as "the murder of democracy" and an initiation of dictatorship. He urged citizens to gather for protests outside BJP offices nationwide, starting with a congregation at the AAP office before moving to the BJP headquarters. "If Kejriwal can be arrested, anyone can be arrested and their voice suppressed," Rai stated, emphasizing that Kejriwal represents an ideology rather than just an individual.

The AAP's response to this incident was swift and robust, with Rai claiming that the BJP's actions are motivated by fear of losing significantly in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. According to him, the formation of the INDIA bloc has led the BJP to anticipate a drastic reduction in their seat count from 400 to merely 40. He accused the ruling party of targeting opposition leaders to maintain its grip on power.

A midnight press conference saw further condemnation of Kejriwal's arrest by Delhi ministers Atishi, Rai, and AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak, alongside Saurabh Bharadwaj. Pathak highlighted that this conflict transcends party lines, representing a broader struggle for clean politics in India. Atishi added that Kejriwal's fight would extend from the streets to the courts, with the Supreme Court scheduled to hear the case.

The arrest has also fostered unity among opposition parties, as evidenced by Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely's participation in an AAP-led protest outside Kejriwal's residence. Expressing solidarity with their INDIA bloc partner, Lovely voiced concerns over the direction in which India's democracy is heading and committed to fighting the elections alongside AAP.

This series of events underscores a tumultuous phase in Indian politics, with opposition parties rallying against what they perceive as an assault on democratic principles and civil liberties. The coming days are likely to witness heightened political activity as parties and citizens alike respond to these developments.
