AAP Cheers Congress Backing in Upcoming Delhi Mayoral Polls
In a significant political development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has received backing from the Congress for the upcoming Delhi mayoral elections scheduled for April 26. This collaboration marks a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls. Durgesh Pathak, a senior AAP leader and the party's MCD in-charge, conveyed optimism about securing a substantial victory in the elections during a press conference.

Pathak highlighted the alliance's commitment to combating what he described as "dictatorship and corrupt governance." He accused the BJP of engaging in disruptive tactics during the previous election cycle and of proposing changes to the Constitution as a campaign promise. The AAP leader underscored the importance of preserving the Constitution, which safeguards the rights of women and Dalits, a legacy attributed to B.R. Ambedkar's efforts.
The Congress's decision to support AAP candidates for mayor and deputy mayor positions was announced by Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely, alongside other party officials. This move aims to prevent any embarrassment to democracy, referencing issues observed in the Chandigarh mayoral polls. The Congress expressed its intention to ensure public interest through this support.
However, this political alliance has not been without its critics. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor mocked the AAP for its internal discord, pointing out that several AAP councillors have distanced themselves from the party due to dissatisfaction and alleged corruption. Kapoor noted that some councillors had joined AAP with hopes of societal improvement but now feel disillusioned.
The AAP has officially nominated Mahesh Khichi for mayor and Ravinder Bhardwaj for deputy mayor. Nonetheless, internal conflict emerged as two additional AAP councillors, Vijay Kumar and Narendra Kumar, independently filed nominations for deputy mayor, challenging the party's official candidates. Vijay Kumar publicly declared his candidacy on social media, appealing for support without pressure on him or his family.
In response to these developments, AAP emphasized its commitment to party discipline and accused the BJP of employing deceitful tactics to undermine their efforts. The party reaffirmed its dedication to governance over negative politics, accusing the BJP of attempting to destabilize AAP through various means.
Mahesh Khichi, representing Dev Nagar ward number 84 in the MCD House, has been an active member of AAP since its inception in 2012 and was part of the India Against Corruption movement. On the opposition side, BJP has fielded Kishan Lal for mayor and Neeta Bisht for deputy mayor.
This political alignment between AAP and Congress underscores a strategic effort to consolidate opposition against the BJP in Delhi's municipal governance. With both parties emphasizing democratic values and governance integrity, the upcoming mayoral elections are set to be a closely watched contest.
