9 accused in 2006 Malegaon blasts case discharged

Mumbai, April 25: Charges against 9 Muslim men who were accused of carrying out the Malegaon blasts case of 2006 have been dropped.

All the nine persons were discharged by a court in Mumbai. The case is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency. When the case was first probed, there were 13 persons who were made accused in the case.

As per the NIA case files out of the 13 accused persons, one has expired while three are absconding. The accused persons in this case as per the NIA files are Manohar Narwaria, Rajendra Chaudhary, Dhan Singh and Lokesh Sharma.

Out of the 9 persons discharged, there were six out on bail while two have been convicted in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts.

The Malegaon case 1:

On September 8 2006 four bombs, three in Hamidia Masjid and one at Mushwarat Chowk occurred in Malegaon which resulted death of 31 persons and injuries to 312 persons. Two cases were registered in this regard at the Azad Nagar PS, Malegaon.

Further, on 13/09/06, a fake bomb was found at Mohammadiya Masjid shopping complex and case vide crime No 3088/2006 was registered at Malegaon city Police station.

The case was first probed by the Maharashtra ATS and then handed over to the NIA in 2011. ATS Maharashtra filed Charge sheet against 09 accused persons on 21-12-2006 and CBI also filed the supplementary charge-sheet on 11.02.2010 against the same accused persons before the Spl. Court Mumbai.

NIA filed Supplementary Charge-sheet against 4 accused persons on 22.05.2013 before the NIA Spl. Court, Mumbai. Case is under trial at NIA Special Court, Mumbai and charges are yet to be framed. Further investigation in respect of remaining accused is in progress the NIA states.
