8th Pay Commission: Salary Hike Soon? Central Govt Employees Urge PM Modi to Fast-Track Implementation

Central government employees have recently made headlines by urging the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission. They argue that the real value of their salaries has diminished significantly due to inflation and the depreciation of money, particularly in the aftermath of Covid-19. This push for a new pay commission comes despite the latest dearness allowance update, highlighting a growing concern over the purchasing power of their wages. To address these issues, the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers has reached out directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Confederation, representing around 700,000 employees across various sectors including postal, income tax, and health services, has officially requested the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission. They argue that salaries have not been revised since January 1, 2016, and with dearness allowance entitlement crossing over 53% as of July 7, 2024, the need for a review is more pressing than ever. The employees stress that without timely revisions, the attractiveness of government positions to the country's most talented individuals is at risk.

In a detailed letter to PM Modi, the Confederation outlined the challenges faced by government employees and pensioners. Notably, they highlighted the steep rise in the cost of both essential and non-essential goods, exacerbated by high interest rates and an average inflation rate of 5.5%. These economic pressures have led to a significant erosion of wage value over the past nine years, further intensified by the global pandemic.

The employees' federation also emphasized the importance of a competitive pay structure for attracting top talent essential for effective leadership and governance. They proposed that pay revisions should occur every five years to maintain this competitiveness. It's important to note that past central pay commissions have typically taken around two years to submit their reports, with the government taking an additional six months or more to implement the recommendations.
