Eighty-Five Indians Discharged from Russian Military as Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Eighty-five Indian citizens have been released from the Russian military, with efforts ongoing to free 20 more, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The issue is expected to be discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Modi had previously addressed this concern with Putin in July during talks in Moscow.

Efforts for Discharge of Indian Nationals
Misri stated that India is closely coordinating with Russian foreign and defence ministries regarding Indians contracted into the Russian Army. He mentioned, "Our understanding, at the present moment, as per present information, is that about 85 people have returned from Russia." The prime minister will travel to Kazan on Tuesday morning for further discussions.
Casualties and Ongoing Negotiations
Unfortunately, some Indian nationals lost their lives while serving in the Russian Army. Misri confirmed that nine Indians have died, and their mortal remains have been returned. He added that around 20 Indians are still in the Russian military, and efforts are being made for their early discharge.
In August, the Russian embassy indicated that both Moscow and New Delhi are working together to identify and release Indian nationals who joined the military voluntarily but now wish to return home. Since April, Russia's Ministry of Defence has ceased recruiting citizens from several countries, including India.
The Indian government remains committed to ensuring the safe return of all its citizens involved in this situation. The ongoing diplomatic efforts highlight the importance of addressing such issues through international cooperation and dialogue.
