62 Industrial Accidents Reported at Ordnance Factories in 2024, Government Informs Parliament
The government reported 62 industrial accidents at ordnance factories in 2024. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth provided this information in response to Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala's query about the number of such incidents over the past five years. The data revealed 75 accidents in 2023, 83 in 2022, 74 in 2021, and 54 in 2020.

Compensation and support for affected workers and their families are governed by the Employees Compensation Act, 1923. Financial assistance or ex gratia payments are made according to the policies of the respective Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). Seth confirmed these measures in his response.
Safety Standards and Regulations
The government was questioned about plans to review safety standards at ordnance factories. These factories, now DPSUs, follow safety regulations set by the Centre for Fire, Explosives and Environment Safety (CFEES). These standards are periodically reviewed to ensure compliance and safety.
To enhance safety, a task force has been established by the ministry. This group assesses safety aspects within units handling ammunition and explosives. Additionally, CFEES conducts annual safety audits of these factories to maintain high safety standards.
Long-term Healthcare Support
Concerns were raised regarding long-term healthcare for injured workers suffering from physical or psychological trauma. Seth stated that DPSUs provide ongoing healthcare support based on government and DPSU policies. This ensures that workers receive necessary care over time.
In summary, the government is actively addressing industrial accidents at ordnance factories through compensation, safety audits, and healthcare support. These measures aim to improve conditions for workers and enhance overall safety within these facilities.
