Why Poultry Farmers In Telangana Are Losing Money As Egg Prices Drop Nearly 50 Percent
Egg prices in Telangana have declined as exports to West Asia slow due to regional conflict, squeezing farmer margins. NECC data shows wholesale and retail rates easing, with rising input costs compounding financial losses for poultry producers.
Egg prices in Telangana are sliding as exports to West Asian markets remain disrupted by the Iran–Israel conflict, leaving poultry farmers facing heavy losses. Retail rates that touched ₹8 per egg two months ago have almost halved. Traders and farmers reported shrinking margins as both export demand and local consumption weaken at the same time.

Telangana is a major egg hub, with about 2,000 layer farms holding nearly seven crore layer birds and producing around 3.50 crore eggs each day. The state records an annual output of about 18,600 crore eggs and ranks third in India for egg production, with hundreds of poultry farms clustered around Hyderabad.
Telangana egg prices and West Asia exports impact poultry farmers
Poultry farmer Ravinder Reddy from Metpally said the sudden decline in egg prices has left farms struggling to cover costs. "Egg prices usually stay between ₹5 and ₹6, sometimes ₹7 during the year. But now they have fallen to ₹3.50–₹3.80 in the market. We are losing about ₹1.50 on every egg," he said.
Reddy said the farm produces around 30 lakh eggs every month, so lower prices are creating steep daily losses estimated between ₹1 lakh and ₹1.50 lakh. "Feed prices have increased sharply. So feed that cost ₹38 per kg earlier now costs ₹43. Expenses on feed, medicines and labour are rising. The government should support poultry farmers," he added.
Telangana egg prices affected as West Asia exports slow
Market sources said export orders from India to several West Asian countries have reduced after shipping routes in the region were disturbed by the conflict. With consignments stalled or delayed, eggs that would usually go abroad are flooding domestic markets instead, contributing to the nationwide fall in rates reported by traders.
Eggs from Telangana, along with supplies from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka, are normally exported to 40 countries across West Asia and Africa. Traders said this export chain has slowed sharply in recent days, forcing producers to rely more on local buyers at a time when demand inside Telangana is also weakening.
According to the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), the current wholesale price is ₹420 for 100 eggs, while retailers are selling at about ₹4.50–₹5 per egg after touching ₹8 earlier. Traders said prices have been sliding for the last four to five days as export demand dropped and summer temperatures reduced egg consumption in many Telangana households.
| Region / Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Retail egg price peak | ₹8 per egg |
| Current retail egg price | ₹4.50–₹5 per egg |
| NECC wholesale rate | ₹420 per 100 eggs |
| Daily egg production in Telangana | 3.50 crore eggs |
| Layer birds in Telangana | Seven crore |
Traders warned that if exports to West Asia do not recover soon and domestic demand stays low, egg prices in Telangana could slip towards ₹3.50 per egg in the coming weeks. They said continued shipping disruption and rising input costs are likely to deepen financial pressure on poultry farmers already reporting sustained losses.
