Telangana Logs Record Low Inflation At 1.06%
For the second consecutive month, Telangana has the lowest consumer price index (CPI) inflation rate in the nation, the lowest since the state's creation in 2014. The only state where inflation stays below 2% is Telangana, where it decreased from 1.31% in February to 1.06% in March, according to government figures. This is much less than the 2% to 4% range that the Reserve Bank of India recommends, which is thought to be economically sound.
In contrast, the national average CPI inflation rate in India was 3.32% in February and 3.34% in March. Jharkhand (2.08%), Andhra Pradesh (2.5%), Sikkim (2.35%), Gujarat (2.63%), and Rajasthan (2.66%) were the next closest states in terms of low inflation.

Even though the headline numbers seem encouraging, several economists are warning against it. According to experts, Telangana's present low inflation rates could be a sign of more serious structural issues, particularly in rural areas. This pattern, which is frequently called "limping inflation," could not be a sign of sound fiscal health but rather of weak demand and slow economic activity.
This is a major change for Telangana, which had some of the highest rates of inflation in the nation-above 10%-just a few years ago, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inflation was referred to as "running inflation" at the time, which led to significant worries about the growing expense of living.
CPI inflation below 2% or above 4% is often regarded by the Reserve Bank of India as a sign of economic stress. Because Telangana is currently below this cutoff, officials, analysts, and economists are taking a closer look to see if the trend is indicative of sustainable growth or a deeper issue.
Speaking at the state's inflation milestone, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy described it as a dramatic reversal from the previous administration. Reddy credited the progress to the Congress-led government's policy approach since taking office in a post on X (previously Twitter) on Saturday.
He attributed the decline in inflation to a number of welfare programs, such as free bus transportation for women, ₹500 LPG cylinders, 200 free electricity units per household, ₹10 lakh in healthcare coverage through the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme, and the distribution of free fine rice through ration outlets.
Telangana had the nation's highest rate of inflation during the BRS administration. As a result of this government's people-centered and revolutionary initiatives, it currently has the lowest inflation rate, according to Reddy.
He went on to say that these programs had brought about structural change throughout the state in addition to offering individuals financial relief. "The anticipated transition is already a reality. "This government is genuinely of the people," he declared.
