India’s first allergen forensics lab to be set up in Hyderabad's Nanakramguda

Imagine a crime scene where the smallest traces of pollen could help crack the case. In a groundbreaking initiative, Hyderabad is set to house India's first-ever Allergen Forensics Laboratory at Nanakramguda, a move that could transform forensic investigations.

Forensic palynology-the study of pollen and fungal spores for crime detection-is an established field in countries like the US, UK, and Australia. Now, India is joining this league with a specialized lab dedicated to studying airborne allergens and their forensic significance.

The initiative is led by Dr. Vyakarnam Nageshwar, founder of the World Allergy Foundation, who has partnered with Centurian University to bring together experts in allergy research, forensic science, and botany. Their goal? To analyze microscopic pollen traces from crime scenes, vehicles, clothing, and even indoor environments to establish connections, track movements, and determine timelines in criminal investigations.

"This idea was inspired by my teacher, Dr. Shripad Agashe, a renowned aerobiologist," said Dr. Vyakarnam. "He often spoke about the vast applications of pollen studies, and now we are taking it a step further by integrating it into forensic science."

The lab will use advanced microscopic techniques to identify different types of pollen, fungal spores, and mold-providing law enforcement with an innovative tool to pinpoint suspects and strengthen legal cases.

While forensic palynology has been widely used in Europe and the US, this marks a new chapter for India. Apart from criminal investigations, the research will also contribute to allergy diagnosis and treatment.

With Hyderabad now at the forefront of this scientific breakthrough, allergen forensics could soon become a game-changer in the country's law enforcement and medical research.
