Hyderabad Metro Gets Major Boost, Pod Taxis To Launch Soon: Know Routes, Speed, Capacity And More

Hyderabad is set for a major upgrade in urban mobility as the Telangana government moves ahead with plans to introduce pod taxis to strengthen last-mile connectivity for metro commuters. The initiative is expected to ease daily travel for thousands who rely on the city's expanding metro network but struggle to reach their final destinations conveniently.

Why the Pod Taxi System Is Being Planned?

Nearly five lakh passengers use the Hyderabad Metro every day. Despite the steady rise in ridership, many commuters face hurdles after stepping out of stations. Limited bus services, expensive auto fares and persistent traffic congestion often make the last stretch of the journey time-consuming and costly.

To bridge this gap, the state government plans to roll out pod taxis, formally known as Personal Rapid Transit. Unlike conventional road-based transport, these pods will operate on dedicated elevated tracks, ensuring that they are unaffected by traffic snarls. This dedicated corridor system is expected to significantly reduce delays and offer a smoother commute.

The network will link metro stations directly with important destinations such as IT corridors, corporate offices, residential neighbourhoods and government complexes where demand for seamless connectivity remains high.

Key Corridors Identified For Phase One

In its initial phase, the proposed system will focus on high-traffic zones. The identified routes include Rayadurgam to Kukatpally, Rayadurgam to Hitech City, the Financial District, Knowledge City and areas surrounding the Secretariat. These corridors have been selected based on commuter density and the urgent need for reliable feeder services.

By concentrating on these busy stretches, the government aims to provide immediate relief to office-goers and residents who frequently travel between metro stations and employment hubs.

How The Pod Taxis Will Operate

The proposed pod taxis will be fully automated and driverless. Each unit is expected to accommodate six to eight passengers and operate at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour. Designed for efficiency, the system could handle close to 10,000 passengers every hour.

The pods will run on electricity or battery power, making them an environmentally friendly addition to the city's transport infrastructure. Their elevated design will also help in maintaining punctuality and reducing travel uncertainties linked to road congestion.

Implementation Model And Next Steps

The project is likely to be executed under the public private partnership model through a design, build, finance, operate and transfer framework. Before work begins, the government plans to appoint a consultant to assess both technical and financial feasibility.

Interestingly, similar pod taxi initiatives are also under consideration in Mumbai, indicating a broader shift towards alternative urban transit solutions in major Indian cities. If implemented successfully, Hyderabad's pod taxi system could redefine last-mile connectivity and significantly enhance the overall metro commuting experience.
