Dear media, why so much obsession for Mumbai 'rains', but least coverage to Assam 'floods'

With the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger marks at Nematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri town, the flood situation has got worse in Assam.

The situation worsened in the state with over 27,000 people affected in more than 70 villages across the state, but sadly no body is talking about these floods.

The flood situation in Assam remained grim today with over 1.3 lakh people being affected in more than 350 villages across the state.

Till Monday, 1.75 lakh people were affected in 11 districts across the state.

The highest number of people affected were in Barpeta district with over 61,000 persons suffering due to the floods, foll owed by Goalpara with more than 50,000 people being affected, the ASDMA said.

Why no coverage by Media

While so much was happening in the North eastern states due to the floods, what was the media doing. How many newspapers really made it a front page news and gave updates on the same by giving it a continuous coverage?

How many channels covered the floods in Assam and urged people to help those who are suffering there? This is not the first time that floods in Assam or the north eastern states of our country have been ignored. Every year people complain of ignorance and step motherly behavior with these north eastern states of our country?

Mumbai 'rain' important but Assam 'floods' not?

Everybody could see media's end-to-end coverage of heavy rainfall in Mumbai, but sadly the 'floods' in Assam are not that important.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its daily flood report that more than 1.3 lakh people were affected as of now in 359 villages across Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, Sivasagar and Jorhat.

Authorities were running three relief camps in Tinsukia and seven in Goalpara, where a total of 1,615 people were taking shelter at this moment, it said.

More than 6,500 hectares of crop areas were under water currently, the report mentioned.

At present, the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat in Jorhat, the ASDMA added.

Each year, nearly 3.2 crore people are affected by the flood damage.

These floods occur every year - but who cares

Experts say that the faulty riverbank management and ageing embankments, rampant earth cutting for construction projects and unauthorised habitations on slopes are the reasons behind these recurring floods and landslides in the region which kills a number of people every year and leads to a lot of devastation.

Alongwith allocation of funds by Centre from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, the state government should focus on how to be prepared for such situation in future and how to bring the confidence back in the people who have suffered this much.

Even when the reasons of floods are known, why have the problems yet not been resolved? Without adequate preparations for this situation which comes every year, the number of people dying will continue to rise.

Its time high time that the government take steps to stop this menace which leads to loss of so many lives every year.
