A user named Monica Verma (@TrulyMonica): Anupama Chopra has taken down her video review of Dhurandhar from YouTube. Someone who can't take criticism of her own work became a full-fledged reviewer of others' work 🙃

A user named A N K I T (@Ankitaker) wrote:

Anupama Chopra has a history of criticizing patriotic films. She got triggered by this dialogue in #HrithikRoshan's Fighter, despite nothing being wrong with it. So it's no surprise she's now criticizing #Dhurandhar as well.

A user named THE SKIN DOCTOR (@theskindoctor13) wrote:

Watched Anupama Chopra's review of Pathaan after reading her strongly negative take on Dhurandhar. She's full of praise for SRK, in complete fangirl mode, and even calls the film's tone "palatable patriotism."

But why such a stark difference in opinion between two films that are similar in so many aspects: undercover agents, an India-Pakistan backdrop, larger-than-life action, and patriotism?

The only real difference I see is that Dhurandhar presents a more grounded reality: Pakistani terrorists driven by religion, using religious slogans after killing Indians. Pathaan, on the other hand, makes a rogue Indian agent the villain, his violence "non-ideological" and purely contractual, while Pakistani characters are paradoxically shown as the reasonable, cooperative ones.

This is the deciding factor in her reaction. A film depicting a realistic dynamic is unacceptable to her, but a film that softens Pakistan's image while placing an Indian as the threat becomes her favourite. She appears to evaluate films less on story, acting, screenplay, or direction, and more on how they align with her own ideological lens.

Absolutely despicable behaviour! A privileged, elite, leftist person who enjoys relevance largely because of her association with a well-known spouse. She can be called the Twinkle Khanna of film criticism.

A user named Param Arunachalam (@taparam) wrote:

ROFL. What a fall for Anupama Chopra. Got an earful from the boss and was forced to take down her review!
She could have avoided this mess by not reviewing Dhurandhar citing conflict of interest like she used to for her husband's films.

Many Support Anupama Chopra

However, many have extended their support as well.

To push someone like Anupama Chopra to withdraw a review is the absolute pits! Threatening and harassing everyone who disagrees with something as fleeting as a film is such a disgrace.

What next? Mannu lorry will accidentally run over their cars and bikes?

It's shameful what this country's public space has turned into. A space where I grew up to love films cautiously, see deeply and debate fiercely is now a blood curdling snake pit.

My heart goes out to each one of you critics taking the punches. FWIW, I'm with you.

Imagine the state of democracy in this country. You can't criticise a film, let alone criticising the government, its policies or the lack of it. So much tolerance. Any half decent industry would have stood by Anupama Chopra but not in India where spine is so rarely found.

Meanwhile, her review has been reportedly made private. Explaining the logic behind it, a user said, "Went looking for Anupama Chopra's Dhurandhar review? It's gone. The Hollywood Reporter India quietly made the video private. For context, The Hollywood Reporter India was launched by RPSG Lifestyle Media, part of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, which also owns Saregama - incidentally the music label for Dhurandhar."
