Who Is Saira Banu? AR Rahman's Ex Wife
Music maestro AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after 29 years of marriage.
In a joint statement released late Tuesday night, they shared the sad news. The couple's journey began with an arranged marriage setup, but who exactly is Saira Banu? Here's a closer look at her background and their story.

Who is Saira Banu?
Saira Banu was born in December 1973 in Kutch, Gujarat. She comes from an upper-middle-class family known for its rich cultural heritage. Saira is recognised for her involvement in social and charitable activities, often supporting causes related to education, healthcare, and community development.
Reports suggest that Saira's family has deep cultural roots. Her contributions to various charities highlight her commitment to societal betterment. She frequently donates to organisations focused on improving education and healthcare facilities.
The couple first met a marriage. In an interview, AR Rahman had claimed that his mother and sister met Saira at the shrine of the Sufi saint Moti Baba in Chennai. "My mother didn't know Saira or her family, but since they lived just five houses away from the shrine, they walked over and spoke to her. Everything happened very naturally," NDTV quoted him as saying.
AR Rahman recalled meeting Saira on his 28th birthday, January 6, 1995. He described her as beautiful and gentle during their brief encounter. They mostly communicated over the phone afterwards. Rahman asked her in English if she wanted to marry him, noting that she was quite reserved back then.
The Marriage Journey
The couple tied the knot on March 12, 1995. Saira is nearly seven years younger than Rahman. Together, they have three children: daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen.
Rahman once mentioned that their marriage faced initial challenges due to cultural differences. In Nasreen Munni Kabir's book "A.R. Rahman: The Spirit of Music," he explained how adjustments were needed as they came from different backgrounds—Rahman's South Indian roots contrasted with Saira's Gujarati upbringing influenced by North Indian traditions.
Reasons Behind Their Separation
In a statement through their lawyers, Rahman and Saira cited emotional strain as a reason for their separation. Despite their love for each other, tensions created an unbridgeable gap between them.
"This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship," the statement read. "Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time."
Both emphasised that this decision was made out of pain and agony. They requested privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging period as they navigate this difficult chapter in their lives.
Their story reflects both personal struggles and cherished memories over nearly three decades together.
